PUSHING THE TASK FORWARD 13-07-2010 Many tasks that start off well are left uncompleted, not because of the inability of the persons involved to bring it to full completion, but more so because they lack the will to bring it to completion. A task gets done better when many heads and hands come together. However these same heads and hands brought together can cause many frustrations to one another resulting in the task coming to a complete halt. Everyone has at some point in their lives had to work with another in order to complete a specific task, be it a school project, or a work related one. Remember the biblical story of the Tower of Babel, in Genesis Chapter 11 versus 4 – 8. In this story the people with one tongue decided to build a tower reaching into the skies. They were actually in the process of accomplishing this feat, when God looked down from above and said: “with one accord, I don’t know what these people cannot do: let me confuse their language.” This story confirms the fact, that there is nothing that a people with a common objective cannot achieve, when they set their minds to it. Since we are all unique individuals, we have different personality traits, likes, dislikes tastes etc. Generally our needs differ from one person to the other, and these manifests in our lives and lifestyles, for instance in the type of house we either live in or want to live in, the kind of car we want to drive , the clothes we want to wear and even our choice of partners. If human beings realize and appreciate the uniqueness and individuality of the human nature, there will be less conflict within our work places, churches, communities etc and with less conflict and oneness of mind everything we put our minds to, can be achieved. This does not necessarily mean there would not be hiccups and frustrations along the way but nevertheless it will eventually be done I will seek to discuss a few strategies that people who have a task to complete can adopt in order to complete it successfully . 1. APPOINTING A LEADER In situations where there are more than two persons tasked to do a work. There must necessarily be a leader to help clarify the objective(s) for which the group has been brought together, facilitate affairs and bring things to order. The leader in carrying out his duties must be firm. We have all been involved in meetings and we all know how chaotic it is, when there is a group without a leader, everybody tries to talk at the same time, nobody gets heard and everyone tries to impose their opinion on the others. 2 . PROMOTING EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION Communication is simply exchange of information; there is a sender of the information and a receiver. It is a two way approach of speak and listening As already mentioned earlier, nothing can be done if persons do not communicate to each other. Both verbal and non-verbal communication may be employed in communicating our thoughts. However persons engaged in communication should be mindful of how they convey their messages. They should be respectful of each other and must desist from the use of abusive language. There is a tendency especially in our part of the world, where older people look down on the younger ones whom they erroneously think do not have anything meaningful to contribute. However parents of little children especially will attest to the fact that sometimes their little ones call their attention to facts and situation they have not even considered at all. 3. BE REALISTIC Persons undertaking a task together must be realistic of the fact that individuals are unique and have different needs which almost always results in disagreements or conflict situations, when they cannot agree on a particular issue We all too quickly assume that persons who do not necessarily agree with us are our enemies However having disagreements is simply an indication that the parties involved have different thoughts and ideas which can be positively harnessed. More too often, we suppose that our ideas and suggestions are the best until we hear another’s. 4. GENERATE OPTIONS Leaders at this point should allow various options to be generated and he is to ensure that every suggestion is noted and discussed; no member is to be allowed to feel as if his suggestions are silly or irrelevant. More too often an idea or suggestions which seems silly at first instance may eventually turn out to be the best option after having gone through various stages of refinement. 5. CONSENSUS-BUILDING At this stage the group members will seek to arrive at a decision which is acceptable to all. Consensus-building can be done through negotiations, caucusing etc until a satisfactory decision is reached. . Members should be very flexible and adaptable at this stage otherwise no decision can be reached. 6. SETTING DEADLINES Persons who have a task to complete should set a time frame or deadline within which the task should be completed. The must be a set time for discussions and a set time for taking actions arising out of the discussions. Time setting acts as a guide, without a time limit, discussions could go on and on without any effective actions being taken. EKUA EGUAKUN |
